One way school Districts on a very tight construction budget can decrease costs is by reusing architectural plans. This works well for Districts that are growing rapidly, and are modernizing or constructing several schools simultaneously.

Newhall School District was undergoing new construction and modernization simultaneously at three school sites with similar needs. When it was determined that the site plans for Wiley Canyon Elementary School matched the needs of two other schools (J. Michael McGrath Elementary and Pico Canyon Elementary School) the District received a reduction of fees on construction documents by agreeing to reuse the original plans for all three schools. The existing plans were modified slightly (facade, trim, etc.) for each school, to blend the building designs into the overall school site. The reuse of plans not only saved money for the District but it also saved design time. Less time was needed for the design process, and allowed for continuity throughout the District in the overall look of the new school buildings.
