Burbank Unified School District, with strong community support, commissioned Flewelling & Moody to transform Bret Harte Elementary School, built in the 1940s, into a dazzling state-of-the-art facility, housing approximately 750 students. Project designers breathed new life into what had been a drab, institutional façade. Exterior elevations were patched, repaired, and then painted with bold, contrasting colors. Steel-sashed windows were removed, and more energy efficient, seismically stable, laminated glazed windows were installed in their place. All mechanical, safety, and HVAC systems were upgraded to current codes. Primary colors — blue, red, and yellow — create a sense of excitement and curiosity for the users. The school now reads like a billboard that says: "come on in, let’s learn, and let’s have fun while we’re learning!"
