The Newhall School District recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction on Dr. J. Michael McGrath Elementary School, which will be located off San Fernando Road on Dockweiler and Valle del Oro.
"This project is one of the two new school construction projects that will allow the District to return to a single-track calendar," said Superintendent Dr. Marc Winger.
Dr. McGrath, former Superintendent Newhall School District, participated in the groundbreaking with his three grandchildren.
District architects Flewelling & Moody and Bernard Bros. Construction Management are working closely with district officials on the $17 million school project. The 53,000-square-foot school will overlook the valley, and serve students on the eastside of Newhall School District. Funded by Measure K dollars and state matching funds from Proposition 47, the site will include 32,660 square feet of classroom space consisting of 27 classrooms. All classrooms will be equipped with the technology to support internet access, a TV cabinet and sink and drinking fountain.
The school is slated to be a K-6 campus. The school will accommodate up to 750 students, and is scheduled to open for the 2003-2004 school year.
