The District honored Dr. J. Michael McGrath, former Newhall Superintendent, for his many years of dedicated service, by naming the Newhall area school after him. The new school will help ease overcrowding in the District.

"This project is one of two new school construction projects that will allow the District to return to a single track calendar," says Superintendent Dr. Marc Winger.

The 53,000 square foot school will overlook the valley, and serve students on the east side of the Newhall School District. Funded by Measure K dollars and state matching funds from recently proposed Prop 47, the site will include 32,660 square feet of classroom space consisting of 27 classrooms. All classrooms will be equipped with the technology to support Internet access, a TV cabinet, sink and drinking fountain.

The school will have a 1,925 square foot library, 1,030 square foot music room, 9,008 square foot multi-purpose room with a kitchen and 8,500 square feet of administration and staff support areas. Outdoors, there will be hard court and field areas.

Dr. J. Michael McGrath is slated to be a K-6 campus. The school will accommodate up to 750 students, and is scheduled to open for the 2003/2004 school year.
